Sending this out today because there will not be much else to say the remainder of the week. So let’s start with the bad – the ugly. We blew a tire!
To the story behind this is that we were driving on the other side of Casper, WY when we heard a loud bang under our coach. We pulled over but all tires were full so we continued our 2 hour drive to Riverton, WY. Parked for the night and when we got up Sunday morning, the tire was flat. Tried to fill it but it went flat again. No Tire Shops were open on Sunday so we had to wait until today – Monday – for someone to come out. They pulled the tire off and we saw the above. In the end, we knew we were very lucky to not have blown the tire and been pushed off the road. We are still recovering from this shocker and are grateful that we are okay.
The tire is a special tire – meaning no tire shop carries it in stock so it has been ordered from Reno and will be here on Friday. In the meantime, we are dry camping at the Wind River Casino where we originally dry camped on Saturday night. We cannot move the coach so we will have to stay here until the tire arrives. That means dry camping for 7 days which means no hookups. (Thankfully we have a car to get out if we need to.) Good thing the generator provides power and air conditioning. We are limiting the use of the water except for quick showers but are thinking we will be fine.
So with that in mind, let’s take a step back before Casper, WY. We went to the Devil’s Tower the place where Close Encounters of the Third Kind was filmed. (Thanks Dave and Joanie Parriott for the suggestion). This was “an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills, this site is considered sacred to the Northern Plains Indians and other tribes. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest traditional crack climbing areas in North America.”
From there we went to Casper, WY to fill up and then travelled to Riverton, WY to dry camp at the Casino and Sunday is when we found the flat tire. On Sunday, when we knew we weren’t leaving we decided to go to the Red Canyon Wildlife Habitat nearby. Since it was very hot, there was not any wildlife for us to see but the canyon and rolling grass hills were beautiful.
Below is the view of the trail we just finished driving.
Needless to say, there is not much else to see in the area so we will be hanging here for a week. This has caused our 2-week stay at the Tetons to be reduced to 1-week but we will be okay. Will send you updates when we get there.
