Wyoming – Yellowstone National Park / Day One: Old Faithful and Boardwalk, Kepler Cascades (Jul 30, 2017)

We first arrived in Rexburg, ID on Saturday and planned on staying in the Sheffield RV Park. We originally made the reservations with Enjoy America a sister site to the RPI. We were very surprised when we arrived. It is a very small park with only about three sites that would hold a mobile home great than 40′. We were lucky we got to pick our site with no issues. However, the sites are so close together we were not able to put our awning out all the way. There is no grass between the sites but many weeds and rocks. Then they water the grass around the park which causes your water pressure to go to a trickle. We paid $26 a night for 50amp plus another $4 a night for electricity. So overall, not a great site.

On Sunday, we decided to drive up to Yellowstone National Park RV resort  without knowing anything about it except Old Faithful RV Resort.

For those that don’t know, this was the first National Park created in 1872 and it is in three states – Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. The main attraction to Yellowstone is its geothermal features with Old Faithful geyser being the most popular spot.

Needless to say, we were surprised it took us over 2.5 hours to get inside the Park. What an error we made in staying at Sheffield! Oh well. We live and learn. We will be moving to another site on Aug 4.

We finally made it to Yellowstone. Not knowing much about the Park we knew we had to be true tourists and go to see Old Faithful Geyser. Old Faithful is the most reliant geyser so that it why so many people come to see it. We had to wait about 10 minutes for it to blow and what a site it was. We could not imagine that beneath the land us was full  of the water that makes these massive geysers.

The first pictures shows you all of the steaming geysers in the background of Old Faithful. The closest picture shows you Old Faithful beginning to erupt. The interesting thing about Old Faithful is that it is consistent but does not erupt for very long but is the main attraction.
We went from there and walked the boardwalk around Old Faithful. Seeing many other geysers. Pictures, unfortunately do not give you a great sense of how powerful it is to be there and to see all of this. Here are some pictures.

The Grand Geyser was our favorite. It doesn’t erupt as often as Old Faithful as it erupts every 17-22 minutes.

“A few hours before an eruption by Grand, Turban Geyser erupts for a duration of five minutes about every 17 to 22 minutes. Grand’s eruption begins within 1 to 2 minutes of the start of one of Turban’s eruptions, with Vent Geyser erupting shortly after Grand starts erupting. On occasion, Grand will stop erupting after 7 to 9 minutes, only to restart with a usually taller fountain a minute or two later. Grand has been known to rarely experience over half a dozen restarts in a single eruption period. After Grand ceases its eruption, Vent and Turban can continue to erupt for another hour.”
It is an incredible view to watch this. We liked this one better than Old Faithful.

This Giant Geyser was a funny one. Even though it was bubbling the last time it erupted was on July 7 2017 and before that it was September 28, 2015. Obviously you are really luck if it erupts when you are there.

Some others – still walking the boardwalk.

Between all of this magnificence, we also came across many moose – all either cows or calves. No Bulls (yet).

We  did see some Bison. We found that the Buffalo are in Africa and Bison are in the Americas. We got up close and personal. One of them was walking on the side of the road (last picture which was taken from Lorraine’s window where the head is). S/he looked like it was limping.

We do need to mention that while you are driving and you see cars either stopped in the road or pulled over you have to stop also because they see something. On one of them there were wolves way out across the prairie and the river. Luckily Mike’s camera could get a shot.

Also when you see someone stopped on the side of the road, it may mean they pulled over and bottomed out. This gal was struck and caused both lanes to be stopped while a Tow Truck tried to pull it onto the road. We left before they were successful. There was a big divot on the sides of the road so we don’t know what she was thinking (or not thinking).

Also along the drive, we found Kepler Cascades. Now that was amazing that through all of the forest and the geysers these falls were there and were so beautiful.

Finally us!  We knew there would be a lot of pictures and this was just one day. We hope you enjoyed! Make sure you plan a trip to this fabulous park. It is incredible.
