This was our second visit to the Blue Mesa RV Camping park outside of Gunnison, CO. Last year, we were still newbies and didn’t take advantage of the surroundings but this year we did. This park is fairly large and in good condition. The sites are wide with plenty of room . Not any grass for Cocoa but lots of dirt. The park is in the middle of nowhere and we were able to use our RPI discount ($10/night) so that was great. It is also only about 30 minutes outside of the Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park. (more about that in Post #3 and #4)
First, staying at the Blue Mesa will require you to pay for their WiFi as there are not other WiFi’s around unless you drive down 1/3 mile down the road to get a weak signal. We could not get Verizon or Sprint on our hot spots in this park. We did get strong signals with our hot spots in Gunnison though.
You will have to share the Blue Mesa WiFi with all others in the RV park. The WiFi was okay for just general use of emails and receiving text messages on your phone. However, you have to purchase connection for every device at a cost $12 for 7 days or $3 per day. Luckily Lorraine took vacation this week so that she didn’t have to worry about paying for her to connect.
So the first thing we did was go into Gunnison to visit the city once again as well as the Gunnison Pioneer Museum which was founded in 1905.
The Train displayed here was the train that ran along side the Gunnison river. (More about the in Post #2).
Of course they had many typical museum buildings but the school house was our favorite.
There was also a warehouse full of ancient cars. This definitely was a showroom.
The interesting thing we have found out west is the carving they do with dead trees. Apparently once a year, Gunnison has a contest on the cravings and they have two days to carve a piece. Luckily we got to see many of these carvings either in a park or around the town. These are amazing and you wonder how they decide what to do with that dead tree trunk.
