Arizona – Sedona (Feb 23-25, 2019)

Our Timeshare, Diamond Resorts, offered us a 3 night/4 day stay in Sedona as long as we attended an member update presentation. With this presentation we would receive a $50 gift card and 4 night/5 day cruise. So we decided since we had some time we would go. The presentation was outstanding so no worries there. After the presentation (with not strong arming), we received the gift card and certificate for the cruise. We have already planned our cruise for November, 2019 for our anniversary. Looking forward to our first cruise. During the week before we went to Sedona, a major snowstorm hit Arizona. The ski areas were happy but other places were not. We had never seen the red rocks with snow caps so that was exciting. Our trip to Sedona got us ready because we got to see the snow cap mountains on the way. After checking in, our first stop was the Chapel of the Holy Cross which is a popular stop in Sedona. The parking lot was full so we had to park down the mountain. Luckily, they had two golf carts that will shuttle you up the mountain. Walking would have been fine during the spring/summer but there was still a lot of snow and ice on the roadway causing pedestrians to walk in the middle of the road so we took the easy way out and took the golf cart up and back.

The chapel was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church.

A new bronze crucifix replaced the original crucifix which is called the Tree of Life by James Muir. To get a full appreciation of this crucifix, please look at James Muir’s website. http://www.jamesmuir.com/christ-of-the-holy-cross–bronze-sculpture.htm

In addition to seeing the views, we enjoyed a nice dinner for Lorraine’s birthday so overall the weekend was nice. We returned to Mesa. One of our newest finds was Mellow Mushroom. Ok – most of you know this place for pizza but this one opens for breakfast and we love it. Here as some great inside pictures of the place.
We are wrapping up our six-month stay in the Phoenix area. We will go first to the Grand Canyon for a week and then off to other places. Sitting still this long was hard for us but Cocoa didn’t have any issues.
