We left the Grand Canyon and made some last minute changes to our travel plans. We decided to go off the typical path and head to Pietown, NM. Pie Town is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located along U.S. Highway 60 in Catron County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 186. Its name comes from an early bakery that specializes in pies. It was established by Clyde Norman in the early 1920s. Pie Town has been noted for its colorful place name. Pie Town is the location of a “Pie Festival” on the second Saturday of each September. Pie Town is located immediately north of the Gila National Forest.
Of course, we came for the pies.
The Pietown RV Park was very small and just a large parking lot with full hookups but the price was right – only $25 a night and easy pull in and pull out. All gravel and no place for Cocoa to walk without stickers.
However, if you want to come to Pietown, expect to not get good WiFi. Even with a booster, we could not connect. The RV Camp did over WiFi but it was a spotty connection. So if you want to turn everything off, this is the place.
We started our one-day trip at the Gathering Place to have lunch and pie. Food wasn’t fancy -just a local place that serves only the meals on the chalkboard plus the pies. Mike got the Chocolate Buttermelt and Lorraine got the Apple Pie. The serving was a 5″ pie which we asked to be cut in fours so we could take 3/4 of it home.
From there we went to see the limited sites.
So we wrapped up our one-day trip to Pie-Town and will be on the road again. Thankfully we will have pie for a few days.
Driving from Pietown to Alamogordo, NM, we came across the Plains of San Agustin which located off of U.S. Highway 60. The plains are 55 miles long and 5-15 miles wide. As we mentioned above, this is where 25 VLMs (radio astronomy observatories) are laid out because of their isolated location. Here are some more pictures.
